Pete's Dragon (2016)
Violence: Car accidents occur, but details of the incidents are obscured or implied. A five-year-old is left orphaned and alone when his parents are killed in a crash. Wild animals threaten a child. Characters are depicted as shooting tranquilizer darts at a mythical creature as well as pulling a rope tight around its neck. The dragon attempts to defends itself against capture by breathing fire at those hunting him. Property damage occurs. Characters are in perilous situations, including one depicted as jumping off a cliff, running through traffic, climbing and falling out of tall trees, leaning out of a car window on a high trestle bridge and climbing onto the back of a moving school bus and then running along the top. It is also implied that a child escapes from a second story hospital window.
Pete's Dragon (2016)
For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace, who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales... until she meets Pete, a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete's descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham's stories. With the help of Natalie, an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.
Hello Drew! I was won over by this right from the start. The relationship between the boy and the dragon is so touching, reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon which I absolutely adore. Yes, this is one of those Disney movies that should please both kids and adults! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
A remake of the 1977 Disney film Pete's Dragon, continuing Disney's trend of rebooting much of their fantasy catalog in live-action, released in the summer of 2016. Now a CGI character, Elliott (voiced by John Kassir) is a cryptozoological oddity of the Pacific Northwest being studied by Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) and his park ranger daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard). New evidence of the dragon's existence comes to light when a feral child named Pete (Oakes Fegley) emerges from the woods, having spent six years living with the beast.
We're so excited to be reintroduced to Pete and his dragon Elliot, who you may remember as one of the stars of the original Disney's Electric Light Parade! You can still see Elliot most nights as he makes his way down Main Street U.S.A., in the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Walt Disney famously declared, "We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things." The company bearing his name, however, has had tremendous success in recent years by looking back and treating the studio's highly regarded films of the past to lucrative remakes (The Jungle Book, Cinderella) and reimaginings (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland).Pete's Dragon is a reimagining rather than a remake of the 1977 musical comedy of the same name, which overcame mixed reviews to have endured four decades somewhat well-known and relatively well-liked. This new version takes the idea of a boy who befriends a generally invisible dragon and throws out everything else from the original film to create an overdramatic adventure more in line with modern tastes. It loses a lot of appeal in the process.
One thing I was really impressed with in the movie was how expressive Elliott was, despite having no spoken dialogue. It was very bold to make a dragon character with a dog-like personality. Elliott is essentially a big dog with wings, he is a faithful companion who protects and cares for Pete just as much as Pete cares for and protects him. They are inseparable partners. Elliott manages to communicate his emotions so perfectly through facial expressions, moans and grunts, as well as his eyes, which are often the only thing in a shot.
After his parents were killed in a car accident in the remote forest, five-year-old Pete was raised deep in the woods by a large green dragon. Six years later, after being spotted in the woods, the humans in a small logging town try to figure out where he came from. The film has all the markings of a genuine tearjerker crossed with an environmental flick in the first 15 minutes.
But loggers are encroaching. Brothers Jack (Wes Bentley) and Gavin (Karl Urban) own a local logging business. They grew up listening to the tall tales of an outdoorsman named Meacham (Robert Redford), who tells exaggerated and frightening stories of the time he saw a dragon in the woods. His daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) has never taken him seriously, but has inherited his love of the outdoors. She has become a forest ranger, and is engaged to be married to Jack.
In the early 20th century, Pete is on the run from the cruel Gogans, a backwoods family that bought him to be their slave. Along the way, he befriends an benevolent dragon named Elliot. Elliot has the ability to fly, breathe fire, and turn himself invisible. The dragon quickly turns loyal to Pete. Together they arrive in the town of Passamaquoddy, Maine.
However, the dragon causes a lot of problems for Pete wherever he goes. It even gets worse when Elliot tries to protect him from unjust punishment. Still, Pete is taken in by Nora, a lighthouse keeper's daughter, and Elliot hides out in a nearby cave.Pete soon bonds with Nora and Lampie, and even tells Elliot about Nora's lost-at-sea fiance in hopes the dragon can find him.
